  • The BE-Attitudes: Truth Upside Down

Jesus-Teaches2 The Beatitudes have been called the Preamble to the Christian Constitution. There are eight positive attitudes stated in the Beatitudes that, if adopted, change lives. It is impossible to have thoughts of resentment, jealousy, anger and ill will and still be happy. So, how do we get beyond these negative thoughts? We live the Beatitudes!

Before we get deep in the Beatitudes, let’s look at a little Scriptural background to Jesus’s great sermon, the Sermon on the Mount:

    Luke 6:12-18 ( TNIV )
12 One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. [this mountainside is just to the west of the lake of Galilee] 13 When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles……………….

17 He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coastal region around Tyre and Sidon,  18 who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases.

Look closely here….a multitude of people from all over the region were there to listen to what Jesus had to say. It must be important! As is so often the case… Jesus was about to deliver “The Truth upsidedown”. A truth that is often full of paradox………the opposite of what the world would have us think….a truth that grabs us and shakes us up. A man once described the truth Jesus preached as , “truth standing on its head calling for attention,”….and boy is it true here!

Now, let’s look at the beauty of Jesus words….listen and meditate on the beauty of His wisdom, His heart and His hope:

    beatitudes  Matthew 5:1-12 ( TNIV )
1 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him,  2 and he began to teach them.
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.
12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

sermon_on_the_mount The attitudes expressed in the Beatitudes provide a foundation for a happy and fulfilled life. In order to have a happy and fulfilled life it is important for us to establish healthy attitudes toward all of the experiences of life. According to Jesus’ final words in the Sermon on the Mount, difficult situations come to everyone. The key here is to adopt these attitudes in our heart.

    Matthew 7:24-27 ( TNIV )
24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.  25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.  26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.  27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

worship1 Some people might question the advantage of being a Christian if we’re still going to have troubles. The advantage is that Christian life is built on attitudes that help us to survive the struggles and the troubles. The Beatitudes clearly speak the inner person….that inner person is the real “YOU”.

The Greek word “makarios” [mak-ar-ee-os] is translated “Blessed” in the TNIV and can also be translated “happy, to be envied and spiritually prosperous”. It is interesting that in Greek literature, this word, “makarios“, was often used to describe the rich with the meaning “free from normal cares and worries”.

Jesus tells us in verse 3, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” People who have this attitude find happiness, joy and satisfaction regardless of their circumstances. So, what does it mean to be “poor in spirit”?

girlPraying The poor in spirit are those who recognize their total dependance on God…….and note that  Jesus tells us that “theirs IS the kingdom of heaven.”  …..in the present tense….. believers CAN…and ALREADY share in the kingdom (as far as it has been revealed) by living out Jesus’ words.

The world recognizes self-reliance, self-confidence, and self-direction. According to worldly wisdom…we either make it on our own or we fail. It puts all the pressure ON US……to live a happy and fulfilled life.

If we recognize the greatness of God and submit totally to Him…the pressure is off us. Like the birds of the air….we can free ourselves from worry because we know that God will give us what we need.

    Matthew 6:26 ( TNIV )
26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.

There are quite a few good examples in the Bible of what it is to be poor in spirit. We’ll look at three.

gideon First we’ll look briefly at Gideon (Judges 6):

Gideon recognized his weakness. He was a lowly farmer in the weakest Israelite tribe, at a time, for seven years, when the Mideonites were making raids at harvest time to snatch the fruits of their labors. God sent an angel to let Gideon know that the Lord was with him and to tell him that he would defeat the Mideonites. Gideon sent word to the other tribes and amassed an army of tens of thousands. Then God told Gideon to send back the army and reduced the group to 300. Listen to Gideons humble heart:

    Judges 6:15-16 ( TNIV )
15 “Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.” 16 The Lord answered, “I will be with you, and you will strike down all the Midianites together.”

    isaiah

Next let’s take a look at Isaiah. When Isaiah was called by God to be His servant, his humility was evident when he cried out to God:

    Isaiah 6:5-8 ( TNIV )
5 “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”6 Then one of the seraphs flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar.  7 With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

moses Lastly, let’s look briefly at Moses. God tells Moses that he will lead his people out of bondage from Egypt. Listen to his humility as Moses talks with God:

    Exodus 3:11-12 ( TNIV )
11 But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” 12 And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you£ will worship God on this mountain.”

So, I believe that to be poor in spirit means the absence of self-pride and the acknowledgement that we are nothing without God.

Let’s look at what Jesus tells us in verse 4, the second Beatitude, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” How can a person who is mourning be happy? When we walk through the valley of the shadow death, this is not just when someone dies….but means more at distressing times in our lives…..Jesus walks with us:

    psalms23 Psalms 23:4 ( TNIV )
4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley,[of the shadow of death] I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

The Hebrew word here translated as “the shadow of death” is “Salmawet”, which means time of deep gloom,  a time of darkness in our lives. We can be happy because we know that sorrow, that even in these deep times of darkness in our lives…..is survivable with God’s help. I would also point out that the attitude of mourning is an attitude of caring deeply……when we care deeply…we are cared for deeply by the Father. On another level, it also means that although we are sorry for the sinful state of the world, we recognize that there is hope. We realize that Jesus provided a cure for our sins and the sins of the world. This hope and acknowledgement provides happiness and fullfillment in life

    CONCLUSION:
Jesus provides answers to conditions in our lives that we so often can’t figure out:
Why is happiness and fulfillment so hard to obtain?
Why is it so hard to get by day to day?

Humble_Jesus The first Beatitude, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Is an “Intellectual” attitude. So often….it is simply because we choose to “go it alone”, we rely on ourself, our own confidence and our own direction……we want to be “self made”. Jesus tells us that the true way….the way of truth and light…is to be “God-made”.We need to acknowledge our need and dependence on God.

The second Beatitude, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” addresses the same attitude from an “emotional” level. People who depend on God have this incredible ability to face whatever life brings…..and that produces happiness and fulfillment.

By adopting these attitudes that Jesus taught, the attitude of humbleness, being “poor in spirit, leaning on God and the attitude of leaning on Jesus every step of our lives……sets the stage and sets a foundation in our lives in which we can build a happy life. I guess that’s why they are called then “Beatitudes”…they are beautiful attitudes to have and to hold close to our heart.

  • How to Deal With Worry

worry-1A friend of mine emailed me recently worried about a decision made to have an operation. As the day for the operation approaches, her heart is questioning her decision and worry is setting in.

I have been faced with situations similar to this, and sometimes different, yet still tough and I have learned to lay my worries aside and put my hope in Christ. This, of course, sounds easy….however…….it’s not always as easy on the ground…. right here…….while we are living this life. So, the question becomes to me…how can I rid myself of this worry….what steps must I take? This is what I have found as I applied God’s wisdom to my life:

prayer-1 My first realization, is that I need to know what God wants me to do.
As I read the apostle Paul’s words to the church at Philippi in Philippians 4:6-7, I realized that like everything that we must do in life, but especially to combat worry (which sometimes really dogs us)…..we should turn to God in prayer, asking Him to help us not to worry. In time, I have found it easier to simply “not worry” because I have built an incredible trust in God through over and over again seeing the result of His wisdom applied to my life. Worry, like many things, is not something we can “wish” away. It’s there and it’s real. But God can give us a peace that transcends all understanding….simply by asking through prayer and petition, every day, over and over. I do believe that worry is something I can pray away….through my trust and relationship with God…knowing that He is in control of my life (which is better than me being in control of my life!)

The Greek word translated here as “anxious” is “merimnao“…which carries the meaning of anxiety or worry. To some degree, worry is unavoidable but…..it can be given a new orientation. Liberation from worry or anxiety comes as we casts it upon God, not because God grants every wish, but because prayer grants freedom from worry.1

    Philippians 4:6-7 (NET)2
6 Do not be anxious about anything. Instead, in every situation, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, tell your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

The second realization, is that worry in itself serves no useful purpose (at least I don’t think it does).
I ask myself…if I worry about a situation…what does it gain me? Often the answer is heartache, other physical problems, lack of sleep, other physical problems, depression, did I say other physical problems? Does worry affect our relationships ever? Does it transform us in a positive way or deform us in a negative way? Usually the latter.

As we focus on God, as we focus on Jesus…instead of our worries…..they start to lose their grip on us. Jesus Himself tells us in the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 6, verse 23 this truth:

    Matthew 6:27 (NET)2
And which of you by worrying can add even one hour to his life?

Jesus-follow_me3My third realization (which I have touched on above), is that it is better for me to live in God’s will rather than my own….because He cares about me!

    1 Peter 5:6-7 (NET)2
6 And God will exalt you in due time, if you humble yourselves under his mighty hand 7 by casting all your cares on him because he cares for you.

Humbling ourselves is not a negative act of self-denial, but a positive one of active dependence on God for help. 2

And lastly…….I have realized that there is not much in this world that compares with my relationship with God…both here as well as through eternity.

As I read what the apostle Paul shares with us in Colossians chapter 3, verse 2, I realize that my focus should be on the Kingdom….not of the worries of this life.

    Colossians 3:1-4 (NET)2
1 Therefore, if you have been raised with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Keep thinking about things above, not things on the earth, 3 for you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ (who is your life) appears, then you too will be revealed in glory with him.

praise It is interesting to me that the Greek word translated here as “above” is “ano“….which has a deeper meaning than what we might think. It can mean “above” as in a place….heaven perhaps….or it can mean “above” as in “time”….the kingdom of heaven perhaps……the kingdom that Jesus told us was right here among us…right now….an eternal kingdom that we can choose to live in as we choose to follow Christ (not just to believe with our minds, intellectually…..but to follow with our hearts…..in obedience and love).

Okay….I do realize that we all worry. However….I believe that as we go to God each day in prayer and as we apply His wisdom to our lives, as we seek the Kingdom and our relationship with Him…..that we have nothing to worry about….because He is in control. Worry is not something we can instantly turn off…but it is something that I believe is expereinced less and less in our lives as we follow Christ. I really like that old saying….Don’t worry….be happy

  • Gaining the World But Losing Your Soul

    Matthew 16:25-26 (NET)
24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone wants to become my follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. 25 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.  26 For what does it benefit a person if he gains the whole world but forfeits his life? Or what can a person give in exchange for his life?

    Matthew 16:25-26 (TNIV)
24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 25 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.  26 What good will it be for you to gain the whole world, yet forfeit your soul? Or what can you give in exchange for your soul?

NOTE: The Greek word here that is translated as “life” is “psuche” which is where we get the word “psyche” from. “psuche” is very often translated as “soul”. The soul is the very essence of us that is the core of all our feelings, desires, affections and aversions. The soul is that essence of ourselves that is not affected by death. It is our moral being designed for everlasting life.warrior-messiah

Christ-suffering2 One of the things I find amazing about this passage of Scripture is that Jesus is telling this to the disciples as he is preparing to go to Jerusalem to suffer. I would note that to Jews at the time of Jesus…the Messiah, was thought to be a glorious and powerful figure….not a suffering one. Here, Jesus, knowing fully that He will suffer and die soon, is preparing the disciples for what will happen.

The expected Messiah from the Old Testament –>>

    <<– Jesus….the suffering servant…our Messiah

THE POINT here is that if you are coming to Jesus, if you “believe”, just so you can gain something in life……..you won’t. We will never gain true life as God intended and wants to bless us with unless we “follow” Jesus…..deny ourselves….take up our cross (which means to accept the rejection of those who do not follow Christ)…and follow Him.

As a condition of our heart, if we truly want to follow Jesus, if we truly believe that God is our Father and we choose to follow Him…..apply and obey God’s wisdom to our lives…..then we will truly gain life.

We are called to be different from the world if we are to be citizens of the kingdom of God/the kingdom of Heaven……which is here….right now in our midst (Luke 17:20-21). We need to look deeply at GodJesus-creation2‘s wisdom and apply it to our lives rather than taking our cues from worldly wisdom.

    Matthew 6:8 (TNIV)
Do not be like them [unbelievers], for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

It’s funny….actually interesting to me…that this all is no different than what God is telling us throughtout the Hebrew Scriptures (The Old Testament). Look at Leviticus 18:3 (this is God Himself speaking to Moses),

    Leviticus 18:3-4 (TNIV)
3 You must not do as they do in Egypt, where you used to live, and you must not do as they do in the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you. Do not follow their practices.  4 You must obey my laws and be careful to follow my decrees. I am the Lord your God.

forgive Jesus……..who IS God……gives us the same call to be different. When we follow Him…when we understand and apply God’s wisdom to our lives rather than worldly wisdom….we shine like a light in the darkness. If we want to save the very essence of ourselves, our innermost being, then we must lose the trappings of this worldly life (lust, greed, etc) and we must “follow” Jesus (compassion, empathy, honesty, love, etc)…..we must apply His wisdom to our daily life.

As for me…..I want to gain my soul…and lose this world….I’d rather live in the kingdom of God/the kingdom of heaven.
